Challenge to reduce environmental impact and enhance the resilience

The construction sector in Mauritius is a significant contributor to the country’s economic development. Substantial growth was observed in 2023 and the projections indicate sustained expansion in 2024. According to Statistics Mauritius, the construction sector encompasses a range of activities including residential and non-residential building, civil engineering, and specialized construction activities.

In 2023, 6,657 building permits were delivered for residential buildings (either new or additions) summing up to a record floor surface of 1,809,630 square meters. For non-residential buildings, 501 permits were delivered for total floor surface of 525 919 square meters.

The sector faces challenges such as rising material costs, supply chain disruptions, and the need for continuous innovation. However, the government’s focus on infrastructure development and strategic investments in housing and public amenities contribute to drive growth. Moreover, international institutions like the World Bank emphasize the importance of sustainable construction practices. According to the World Bank’s 2023 report, “adopting green building practices is essential for reducing environmental impact and enhancing the resilience of the construction sector.”
