A dynamic sector poised to embrace sustainable practices

The textile sector in Mauritius has shown resilience and growth potential during the 2023-2024 period. According to the Economic Development Board, the sector benefits from preferential market access through agreements like AfCFTA, AGOA, and CEPCA, which have facilitated trade and investment.

The sector’s growth is driven by a focus on sustainable product strategies, which the Made in Moris label could steadily support alongside eco-friendly fashion shows to showcase emerging talents and innovative processes.

Ciel Textile emerged as the top performer with a turnover of Rs 15,669 million and a profit before tax (PBT) of Rs 797 million as of June 30, 2023. Compagnie Mauricienne de Textile Ltée followed with a turnover of Rs 9,162 million and a PBT of Rs 728 million as of July 31, 2023. Fire Mount Textiles Ltd also performed well with a turnover of Rs 2,353 million and a PBT of Rs 70 million as of June 2024 (unaudited). Despite these successes, some companies faced challenges. Exotic Garments Ltd reported a negative PBT of Rs -4.79 million as of June 30, 2023.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) highlighted the importance of policy options to re-invigorate the sector and contribute to the economy’s transformation. The textile sector in the Indian Ocean region is increasingly adopting sustainable practices. Innovations such as eco-friendly dyes and digital printing techniques are minimizing environmental impact while enhancing product quality.

However, the sector faces manpower concerns. Skilled labour shortages and competition from other industries have made it challenging to maintain a steady workforce. Addressing these issues through vocational training, industry partnerships, and burden-free procedures to recruit workers even from abroad is crucial for sustaining growth and innovation.

Overall, the textile sector in Mauritius is expected to continue its positive trajectory, supported by favourable economic conditions and strategic regulatory measures. The focus on enhancing product offerings, adopting sustainable practices, and addressing manpower concerns will be crucial for long term reinvention of this sector.
